Although the train stopped at a station on the incline, the light engine successfully started from the station and continued the ascent. An ordinary engine was sent to assist the train at the rear, in case the "Little England" proved unequal to the task, but it is said that the bank engine was unable to keep up-with the train! The following table shows the result of the trial of the "Little England" on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway--On September 7th, 1850, another "Little Englander" commenced service on the Liverpool and Stockport Railway, under guarantee to haul a train of seven carriages up an incline of 1 in 100, stopping and starting upon it, at a speed of 25 miles an hour, and consuming notmore than 101b. of coke per mile; on the level the speed was to fce 45 miles an hour. Excellent book on the development of steam locomotives, but from an English outlook - mostly covered trains built in England, Wales, etc. Still a good buy at 99 cents, but I was expecting the American side of things. Nice photographs of the old British locomotives and drawings from the models that never made it in front of a camera.
